Environmental pollution broadly refers to the presence of undesirable substances in the environment which are harmful to man and other organisms. There has been a significant increase in the levels of harmful environmental pollution mostly due to direct or indirect human activities in the recent past. The major sources of environmental pollution are industries, agricultural and other anthropogenic and biogenic sources, etc. The pollutants are chemical, biological and physical in nature. Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather within the context of longer-term average conditions. Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have been identified as primary causes of ongoing climate change, often referred to as global warming.

Healthy ecosystems and environments are necessary for the survival of humans and other organisms. Ways of reducing negative human impact are environmentally-friendly chemical engineering, environmental resources management, and environmental protection. Information is gained from green computing, green chemistry, earth science, environmental science and conservation biology. Ecological economics studies the fields of academic research that aim to address human economies and natural ecosystem.

Scope & Importance

The goal of environmental sustainability is to conserve natural resources and to develop alternate sources of power while reducing pollution and harm to the environment. Controlling the environmental pollution and the conservation of environment, biodiversity, and controlling environmental pollution, and the effects of global warming are the major focus areas of all the countries around the world. It encompasses environmental chemistry, soil science, ecology, climatology, vegetation cover, marine and freshwater systems, as well as environmental remediation and preservation, and agriculture and land use. Environmental Sustainability is being used to provide alternative cleaner technologies which help to further reduce the hazardous environmental implications of the traditional technologies Environmental sustainability deals with the earth processes, evaluating alternative energy systems, pollution control and mitigation, natural resource management, and the effects of global climate change by human activity, as opposed to changes in climate that may have resulted as part of Earth's natural processes.
